In March 1972 Chancellor Ferebee Taylor requested the faculty Committee on University Government and the Faculty Hearings Committee to act jointly as the Tenure Study Committee and to determine the relationship between the university at Chapel Hill's tenure policies and the American Association of University Professors' guidelines on tenure.
